BlockFi had blamed its predicament then on "crypto market volatility" and a broader market downturn. It was further hurt when another crypto lending platform, Celsius, filed for bankruptcy in June. While BlockFi said it didn't have any direct exposure to the competitor, it still saw an uptick in customer withdrawals.

Kroll says that it has already notified affected individuals. In the aftermath of the reported breach at Kroll, several people related to the pending bankruptcy cases of the crypto firms posted samples of phishing emails they received on social media.

Is Kroll a bankruptcy service provider?

Kroll, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CoinDesk, is a bankruptcy service provider for numerous companies, not just in the crypto sector. Kroll’s website also promotes a cybersecurity consultancy service, involving “elite cyber risk leaders uniquely positioned to deliver end-to-end cyber security services worldwide.”
